Google’s Panda and Penguin Update

What do you think when you hear the words “Panda” and “Penguin?”  Cute animals, right?  Are we talking about the zoo?  Not exactly.  Panda and Penguin are two Google SEO updates.  The main reason for these two updates was to try to eliminate useless websites and control spam on the web.  There is so much information out there on the worldwide web that Google wants you to be able to find the best and most helpful sites first.

Let’s talk about Panda.  Panda came about to try to lower the search rankings for websites that do not contain quality content or have redundant content that isn’t of much use to searchers.  There are sites that are called “content farmers” which duplicate content from original sites and use it as their own.  This sometimes even helps the “content farmer” site outrank the original site, and this just isn’t fair.

Panda looks for unique content that is backed up with research, analysis and thoughtful insight. The goal is to try and eliminate the sites that don’t offer much value for the person searching a subject. Panda is designed to help you, as the web surfer, find the best websites in your Google search.

Penguin, is a whole other animal.  The goal of the Penguin update is to control non-relevant sites.  Penguin’s aim is to get rid of websites that stuff their sites with nothing more than keywords. These sites can also be sites that purchase anchor text and links but have nothing of value. In the past, some of these tactics may have helped increase rankings for the website owner, but because the page(s) is nothing more than a laundry list of keywords, there isn’t much value to the net community. With the Google update, Penguin is more finely trained to reduce the rankings of such sites and thereby increase search quality.

What Does That All Mean to You?

One immediate effect is that companies using these non-preferred strategies to increase their rankings are now penalized and many have seen their site rankings drop dramatically.

When searching for an SEO firm to manage your website rankings, it is probably a good idea to make sure their techniques don’t end up hurting your rankings in an effort to circumvent the system.

Our clients are unaffected by this update because we follow a strict process flow that incorporates Google’s, as well as other search engine’s guidelines. Following these guidelines through the years has helped to ensure our clients receive consistently high page rankings for their websites.
